City of Van Buren adopted the first citywide preservation plan by a vote of 6 for and 0 against by the City Council in 2009. This plan provides historical data, existing character and development, historic resources, design guidelines, and identifies policies and procedures for implementation and suggested local preservation actions. This plan was prepared and recommended by Van Buren Historic District Commission and Thomason & Associates out of Nashville, Tennessee.
Press Argus-Courier Editor Kenneth Fry is the recipient of the 2009 Arkansas Historic Preservation Alliance award for Outstanding Preservation Reporting in Media. Mr. Fry will be honored along with eleven other award winners at the 2009 Preservation Awards Banquet which will be held at the Little Rock Club in Little Rock, Arkansas January 15, 2010. Congratulations, Kenneth!
Guidelines for Fairview Cemetery are reaching a final draft. The Historic District Commission should have those finalized in February 2010. After the commission reviews, they will vote on whether or not to recommend to the City Council for approval.
Historic District Vice-Chairman Dwight Hopkins has accepted a position on Board of Directors of the Historic Preservation Alliance of Arkansas in Little Rock. Dwight has served on the Historic District Commission for nearly 7 years, and has held the position of chairman and presently sits vice-chairman for that commission. Dwight has been involved in preservation for this community in this capacity and others over the years. Congratulations, Dwight!
